Thanks for taking the time and energy to coach a Sharks junior basketball team. We can guarantee that being an important part of a player’s development and enjoyment of basketball is an awesome feeling.
Coaches must be registered with the Club and meet all Child Safety requirements to participate as a coach and receive coaching benefits. This is a Sharks and SBA requirement managed through the Operandio system. Click here for instructions on how to register.
Coaching Benefits
Registered coaches are entitled to 50% refund of fees paid for the child/sibling in the team coached.
One coaching refund per team is available.
Coaches receive free entry to the stadium when coaching – simply ask to sign in at the desk. (Note only one coach per team can sign in free).
Coach Season Expectations
Club Philosophy
The Club’s primary objectives at domestic level are participation, player development, enjoyment, sportsmanship and fostering a lifelong love of basketball.
While teams are encouraged to compete to the best of their ability, winning is not prioritised over player development and positive player experiences.
Court Time Expectations
Coaches are expected to provide all players with reasonable and fair opportunities to participate on game-day throughout the season.
Court time does not need to be equal in every game; however, significant disparities in playing time should be avoided without a clear developmental, welfare or disciplinary reason.
Players should have meaningful on-court involvement and not spend substantial portions of games on the bench purely for competitive advantage.
Coach Philosophy and Communication
The Club recognises that coaches bring different levels of experience, coaching styles and approaches to player development.
Coaches are encouraged to establish and communicate their team philosophy at the commencement of each season, including their approach to:
- Player development
- Court rotations and playing time
- Team goals and expectations
- Skill development priorities
- Game management and decision-making
A coach’s individual philosophy should complement and operate within the Club’s broader philosophy of participation, development, enjoyment, inclusion and sportsmanship.
While coaches retain discretion in managing games and team rotations, this discretion should be exercised in a manner consistent with the Club’s expectations regarding fair participation and positive player experiences for all players.
Respect and Inclusion
Every registered player is a valued member of their team regardless of ability.
Coaches are expected to create an environment where all players feel included, respected and able to contribute.
Coaching Bags
The Club offers coaches a training bag with a range of equipment including a coach’s board, bibs, whistle and cones.
